CHICKEN WIRE MASTERPIECES

Jean-Michael Basquiat by Ivan Lovatt

Australian sculptor, Ivan Lovatt , creates wonders with chicken wire. It must be one of the most difficult ways to create art which is probably why you don't find many people doing it in quite the unique style that Lovatt does. All the layers of mesh twisted and folded to form the hills and dales that make up a face like Einstein's.....

or a man's jacket or Dame Ednas purple possum picker ........

.....or an owl.

The man's clearly a genius.

  2. Robyn..Wow.. what a talent...these are fantastic.. I know chicken wire and I don't know how they could manipulate it so precisely ...

beyond that I love chickens, so anything in connection with them is something to crow about.... er-er-errr...xmrcut

  3. Jackie I'm wondering if the wire is galvanised. His hands must surely get in a big mess. He also works with driftwood sculptures which might be easier on the hands. The little bit of rusty metal that I use causes havoc with my poor hands.

Gwen...LOL....we will crow together shall we?

  4. omg, these are truly mindblowing. like jackie, i wonder if they rust. that'd be fabulous! and like gwen, i wonder how on earth they can manipulate the wire so precisely... and back to jackie, what on earth must this do to their hands?!! can you wear gloves and still make something this detailed???

  6. I think we should have a chat line here, Lynne. Gloves don't work for me. They actually trip my fingers up and I'm always making holes in them and I don't even work with that much wire.

  7. I can't imagine the strength he must have in his hands! I can barely get chicken wire around the veggies in my garden let alone create sculpture with it! Brilliant!! I love all the artists you are presenting here...It's always such a great surprise!

    (chicken wire doesn't rust)

  8. These are amazing...
I love this sort of wire scuplture...could gaze at it for hours.
I wonder if he uses heat to help manipulate the wire like that!
    They would look fantastic 'rusted'too...

  13. Stephanie, thanks for that little gem. Chicken wire doesn't rust. (What a pity...I had all sorts of ideas about using rusty chicken wire.)

Jo, thats a point I hadn't thought of....using heat to help manipulate the wire. Pity Ivan doesn't have a blog so we can go and ask him.

    Kate and Willow...truly amazing!

Chris and Embellisher, I am constantly amazed at the things people do.
