BOOK WEATHER

After a spell of wonderfully balmy weather we now have rain and a wind blowing straight off the snow capped peaks of the Drakensberg.  Brrrr..... it's books, jigsaws and hot butternut soup weather. My daughter is the jigsaw fanatic but I prefer to curl up on the couch with a good book. Poor old Ben is not too enamoured with the state of affairs but he ventures out to inspect the rain soaked garden once in a while and then he's back under his blanket with just his nose sticking out.

I feel guilty reading when I've so much work to do but since I do most of my work outside the rain gives me a good excuse to read.

"The wonderful thing about books is that they allow us to enter imaginatively into someone else's life.... But the real surprise is that we also learn truths about ourselves, about our own lives, that somehow we hadn't been able to see before." - Katherine Paterson

  3. Ahhh, curling up with a good book. Although it is the start of the cold season for you, it is early summer here in the Great Plains of North America, which means thunderstorms. I like nothing better than sitting on the couch, hearing the wind gusting my windchimes and rain pounding the roof, all the while knowing that I am inside and safe with my pups and a good book. Things are not so different across the continents are they?

  5. OMG, I have that dinnerset! Did you sneak into my cupboards by any chance???? Hahaha, what are the odds? That's my cup and my plate, AND we had soup tonight!!! And I read two books today. And I am a female. And the weather was grey, wet and cold here too. Too weird Robyn. Are we synchronised or what! :)

  6. I have a question about butternut soup. Here in the states, we have a vegetable called butternut squash, which is a big gourd with an orange colored meat. I have made a delicious soup (I think, anyway) with it with cream and chicken stock and spices. The squash is cut into chunks and boiled until soft, then pulverized in a blender and strained before mixing with the cream and spices. It also works with acorn squash or even pumpkin. Is your recipe similar?

  7. Orangehouse, your recipe sounds similar but I add orange juice or a Granny Smith apple and curry powder for flavour. Deeeeeelicious!
I love anything with butternut squash in it. Stew, Butternut Quiche, fritters.......
