COLLAGE FOR SELF DISCOVERY

This week I started an online course, Intuitive Collage with Shelley Klammer. (Collage For Self Discovery).
"This is a course in authentic, creative self-expression through collage. This is for those who may doubt their creative powers, yet long to be creative, and for those who want to deepen their self-awareness and cultivate a more solid and joyful connection to their inner, authentic self."
I am really enjoying it and though I'm still in the first week of the course I've already had a few AHA! moments. In the past when I've started a collage I tended to overthink it and tie myself up in knots, get frustrated, get bored and then give up before it was completed. This is the first time I have created a collage intuitively, choosing each element because it "jumps out at me" rather than it being a case of, I must find something red that goes with such and such a theme. And yet a theme does appear but I only noticed it half way through the collage.

The weird thing about these collages is that I will go off and do something else for a while and when I return to touch them up, I'm quite surprised by them. It's almost as if someone else has created them. I put this down to the fact that I'm feeling the process rather than thinking it. A right brain process rather than a left brain process.
It's also been a great opportunity to loosen up and play......and whilst playing I am experiencing insights which of course is the whole object of the exercise.

"My collage unfolds with a force greater and more generous than I could ever plan for. The patterns and colors are instantly opulent and richly detailed. I find a warm red Celtic scroll, a verdigris fossil. I look for small finishing details, a wing from a bird, a ladybug, a church steeple. Finally it feels finished and I feel complete, more whole than when I began. I look up at the clock. Where has the last hour gone?" - Shelley Klammer

Check it out  here.

  1. This is so interesting. I love what you've come up with. I take so little time in my life to meditate anymore. I know when I let go of my conscious, my unconscious comes up with the most creative ideas. I'll bet Shelly is going to have many more students sign up for this course

  2. wonderful!
it's hard to 'get out of our heads' sometime...for me it's a gift when I can get to that place, long enough not to let 'those' voices interfere with process

    ps
new package in the mail ;)

  3. Great collages, Robyn! I like the photos you selected and notice famous artist's work in each. Is that Gauguin wide eye and Georgia O’Keeffe’s skull? Such amazing things result when we get out the way of art and get out of our critical minds. Enjoy more of your online course.

  5. mmm.. love that word authentic. Isnt it magical how art springs forth when you get out of it's way? This sounds like amazing trip you are on and your collages are already deep and rich. I am off to check her out.

  6. Chris, isn't that what we all do. Neglect the things that would make a difference in our rushed lives.

Stephanie, perhaps we need to make an appointment with ourselves to ensure that we have that quiet time otherwise there is always something that gets in the way. You should have heard the little argument going on in my head about taking time out to play when I should be doing my xmas orders. Aah a package....you spoil me.

gina, the skull is a photograph from a South African magazine, Visi....I also thought of O'Keeffe. The eye is from a modern painting but not Gauguin. I will try and find the magazine page I took it from.

    Thanks Willow.

grrl, you will enjoy Shelley's site. It's full of amazing intuitive art and pearls of wisdom.

  11. 'self discovery' - a brave path and worth every step! - any honest art is created when we move out of the way - it's my mantra when working with actors - sometimes it takes years of training before they are able to step aside and put on an authentic performance - your collages are wonderful - go deep!

  15. So great that you are taking this course. Funny, I had this website bookmarked a long time ago and forgot about it. Thanks for inspiring me to re-visit it. I may even sign up! I'm always a big proponent of the intuitive approach to art. I have a reminder sign up in my studio with the definition of intuition. I tell my students, if you find yourself thinking, just stop, take a deep breath, and move back to your gut.

Pamela, thank you. It's a wonderful course with a great teacher.

Lynne, I know you would love it too. It's actually quite addictive. I nthought I would have a rest from collages today but I ended up playing again....my xmas orders forgotten.

    Jacky, glad you enjoyed it.

Jeane, it is difficult to step aside. Today I found myself beginning to control the process again and had to make an effort to get back into intuitive mode.

Bindu, I'm glad you found me!

Thanks Megha, I'm looking forward to the next step.

Expframe, I left a message on your blog. Just click on Shelley Klammer at the top of my post. It really is a worthwhile course to do.

  18. Fabulous results.Your post echoes my experience with collage too, must try your approach of simply picking things that jump out at you and putting them down and hopefully the results will be as stunning as yours.Robyn your posts give me so much to think about.

  19. he course is amazing! I am beginning week 5 and cannot believe the absolutely amazing experiences I've been having in my life. I, too, find that when you leave the collage it's such a whirlwind of "wow!" that hits me, sometimes I will just leave the collage if I'm stuck and it's like getting the wind knocked out of you and I can "hear" the meaning. Keep it up, it's awesome!

  20. Embellisher, just waiting for the right image to "speak" to me has made such a difference.

  27. Finally found your blog again at last, so beautiful where you are. The stories and photos of the monkeys are very amusing. And your art, well, it does take ones breath away. For me it's how your compositions are so full, yet there remains the perfect amount of breathing room on the format even in your sculptural work. Skilled and beautiful.

Thank you for leading me here, now I'll enjoy following your adventures in collage :)

Yours are beautiful. I love the individual pieces you've chosen to work with. Enjoy your course.
