Kuba Cloth (Bark cloth) from Democratic Republic of Congo. Hamill Gallery.I may be obsessed by shades of white at the moment but black and white together have always made my heart race. I've been encorporating black and white pattern into my work for years (see my profile photo:-) ... from painting, beading and jewellery making to paper mache and carving.
Here are a few images that make my day. (Thanks to Leslie for emailing me some of the links and Donna whose interesting link list lead me to new artists)
Echo 2 by Graceann Warn
Recycled fabric by Jylian Gustlin
Counterpoint#5 by Janet Jones
Each other 2 by Helen Carnac. Vitreous enamels on steel.

Charred black and white walls by Terunobu Fujimori
wow! each photo beautiful in its own right - you three, Leslie, Donna and yourself, share these beautiful minimal color palettes - wonderful
ReplyDeleteThese are stunning and I can't wait to explore the links! Thankyou Robyn!
ReplyDeleteBeautiful photographs - I love that first one from the Congo, which has such a raw quality to it.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful choices! My eyes are drawn to Echo 2...loving the yellow gold and touch of red... I love black and white but it's the bit of color that makes my heart sing!
ReplyDeleteAs usual, a post par excellance! Are you having fun with high speed or what Robyn?! The other day I tried to make a black and white piece to no avail. So I changed it to "white and black" and Ta Da! Much easier. One things I have observed - send an artist to another artist's site and immediately they pick out the best of the best, as your post shows. Glad you enjoyed Helen Carnac. And thanks for gathering all this luscious eye candy in one place.
ReplyDeleteJeane, these pieces are making my heart sing!
ReplyDeleteCaroline, glad you like them.
Weaver, Kuba cloth ....love it!
Mary Ann, I think Echo 2 is my favourite too.
I love your post! Black and white is near to my heart as well. And most of the artists you linked to are my favorites and I have them in my blog as links as well. And thank you for the mention at the top your post.
ReplyDeleteHow nice to be part of an inspiration.
donna
Wonderful pics!
ReplyDeleteEcho 2 is #1 on my list of faves, but I sure would like to know what the rest of the house in the last piece looks like.
ReplyDeletehigh speed internet has put you in high gear. I'm still enjoying all the colors of white! sseriously, the black and white photos are stunning. once more you treat all of us! thank you, lyle
ReplyDeletelike a diner who's just finished a five course meal i'm stuffed, but i still want more!!! is it possible to have to much of this color combo? i think not. it's soooo rich and satisfying, yet somehow it wakes up something inside of me that wants to see more, create more...

i have been on Jylian Gustlin's site for a while now, admiring and thinking; her bio is fascinating. She uses some ideas of mathematics that are fascinating and in the shapes of shells, etc...
ReplyDeletevery wonderful.
will have to check out the others later...
thanks Robyn.
Such strength in some of these pieces. I especially love 'echo' and 'each other.2'
ReplyDeleteAlways something interesting to see here!
Robyn, another wonderful collection of artwork.
ReplyDeleteI am a fan of black and white. It often finds its way into my pieces. Black and white together add such energy.
Oooh, thanks Robyn! Glorious black and white choice!
ReplyDeleteFor you: http://franceva.blogspot.com/2009/09/paint-brush-award.html
GOOD MORNING! I followed you here from my textile art blog, thanks so much for coming to visit and for your lovely comment there.
ReplyDeleteThis is like falling into the most awesome art gallery ever. So many different artists to enjoy, and YOUR work is stupendous. Wow.
I don't know how you found me, but so glad you did...what a delight to see all the wonders here: your carvings, the pink sand and sea, and everything in between.
I love the simplicity of that last photo. So beautiful!
ReplyDeletemmmm...black and white. You are just in time, as I have a giant disaster of a painting on my easel. And I was just thinking to myself, you need to pare down your color, Karine. Uh huh. So true.
ReplyDeleteThere's just something magic about black and white. These photos illustrate that well!
ReplyDeleteBlack and white is without doubt a powerful color combination. Great choices im images here. I am familiar with some of these artists and am off to check the others out. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteoooo Echo 2! What is it about the black and white stripey effect then? I'm drawn to to it everytime?!

Leslie, .....whoops a speed wobble there .... LOL...I'm having a ball with Broadband! And thank YOU!
ReplyDeleteDonna, inspiration abounds!
Thanks Lawendula.
Stevie, have a look at the link under the stripey wall photo. There are slides about this artist and more houses with charred walls.
Lyle, I am having such fun but am going to have to draw the line somewhere so that I can get down to some work.
Lynne, black and white have the same effect on me.
Mansuetude, glad you enjoyed the link.
Lisa, they zing don't they?
Kim, it was the black and white in your work that first caught my attention. You are so right about the energy.
Thanks so much B&W, I will pop over to visit shortly.
Thanks Lynn. Who else but our friend Seth who pointed me in your direction:-)
Bindu, it is striking isn't it?
Karine, I can't imagine anything you paint being a disaster.
Pamela, pure magic!
Seth, glad you found something new.
Mimi, perhaps because it's so striking it grabs your attention immediately.
Lovely series of images, the last one is my favorite, its awesome Robyn.
ReplyDeleteThe bark cloth is gorgeous! What makes the colours special is that they look weathered and a worn- rather than a stark black and snow-white contrast.
ReplyDeleteAnother wonderful post... those vitreous enamel on steel bowls and that black and white wall really speak to me!
ReplyDeleteI just love your posts.
Jacky xox
Another great post of some stunning art.Love the Janet Jones.
ReplyDeleteI've only just found your blog and am blown away by this post and the two previous. I shall come back for more!
ReplyDeleteI love B&W's simplicity and graphic power to carry design and beauty... It can be severe, but you've picked such warm images as examples - I just love them!
ReplyDeleteLots of simple/strong repetition here.
ReplyDeleteAlways a fav. .... so calming and pleasing on so many levels.
Jjjj
Its black and white for me too Robyn. Nice post as always. B & W has great significance for ''michael and I and u can see the influence of it in his art often
ReplyDeletethat was a lovely collection to wander through and thanks for the link to the maker of beautiful bowls...something i'm presently fascinated by
ReplyDeleteRobyn, This is the first time I have thought to comment. There are so many people here commenting on your blog I got scared off!!!!!from commenting but here goes. Black and white means a lot to me as it reminds me of my mental illness and how it has its light side and dark side. I celebrate things black and white in the world. I love animals that are black and white and am blessed often by my neighbours black and white cat that comes to visit.
ReplyDeleteLots of love from susan in australia
black and white makes me heart sing too...incredible photos and works of art!
ReplyDeletebeautiful. I LOVE this post! There is something about black and white which is just so powerful. brilliant collection.
