WOOD

Offering (detail) by Lin Lisberger

I love wood. The smell and the feel of wood in all it's forms. Magestic oaks casting shade .... natural forests flourishing on hillsides....... rotting tree trunks on forest floors providing food and shelter to all manner of creatures .... weathered drift wood on lonely beaches....wood stacks next to the hearth.... and then there's the transforming of wood that has been crafted and chiseled as if by magic into art.

Chained Goddess by David Hostetler

"My medium is wood. Wood appeals to my close affinity with nature and things organic. Wood is a magic material, alive and working organic, and never completely at rest." - David Hostetler

Cycladic Tree Goddess by David Hostetler

David Hostetler continues.....
"Among all goddesses, Asherah is my inspiration, for it is she who was carved from living trees as well as the image of the tree of life. This goddess is the embodiment of my passion for wood and all that is woman."

It's worth a visit to Hostetler's website, here.

Peace Burden by James Mellick

.....And now for something completely different. I'm thinking spider ....poised for attack....or as Karin commented...something that skitters across the floor when you switch the light on.

Strider 2 by Ben Carpenter

Ben Carpenter's work is strangely compelling. The wood grain is beautiful, the polished surface inviting to touch. There are pieces reminiscent of seeds, pods and plant forms, all beautiful in a Venus Flytrap sort of way. See for yourself here.

  1. oh yes, I am a wood lover, too - so sensual, warm and inviting in all it's stages...
I love these Ben Carpenter pieces. Quirky alien like forms, I can imagine catching skittering across the floor when I turn on the lights!

  7. Strangely compelling and more than a bit scary robyn. Thanks for the comment about collages - yes I find ten minutes is just about right and I too intend to do one each day. I have enrolled on the free collage course, thanks to your link.

  11. I have very few pieces of wood art in my house, so far. I have one small freeform bowl that I love to touch. There is such a connection to the earth by just touching wood -- something that does not happen with other media (for me anyway). I'm looking forward to exploring wood in the art world.

    Thanks for another fantastic post.

  12. I came to you through Weaver's collages and I love your very interesting blog, being from Australia I feel we need to know more about our South African neighbors. Probably should say the world, but realise I dont know much about Africa except the garden plants that were brought here in the soil as ballast in the sailing ships and strife in different areas that hits the news.

  14. What a marvellous collection you've assembled, Robyn. I just want to touch each piece! What skill and love must have gone into the making! My only experience with wood was a not particularly successful attempt at carving for a wood block print - it was difficult!!

  22. I love the smell of wood too- especially burning. Last night I could smell it and was thinking about campfire memories when it struck me as odd that there was a fire nearby in the middle of summer. I double checked the kitchen and sure enough, I'd turned on the wrong burner for my tea. I'd left the cutting board on the burner and came back to smoke and flames. Our apartment still smells like campfire and I'm still scrubbing the stove.

Lisberger's piece is intense. I yearn to own it.

  25. The Bible talks about workman. Isa. 40, Hosea 8, ect. that make images of gods and godesses from wood. Unfortunately, these men are not spoken of highly by God of the Bible.
