When we deliver totems to the KZNSA Gallery in Durban we usually make a day of it.

There are always many artworks to put a smile on one's face .

Don't you love this giant mosquito made from cooldrink cans?
We drove home via Essenwood Road where some of my favourite old Durban houses are situated. It was quite an exhausting day so I was pleased to get home for a soothing cup of ginger chai.

The Farmers Market is the first stop before going on to the gallery. (see previous post)
Some times we have brunch at the Pavillion which is our favourite Shopping Mall but this time we gave it a miss considering we had snacked ourselves silly at the market.
See the upper domes to the right as we slow down at the stop street. I think its quite impressive...if only I can get a better photograph.
Next stop, the KZNSA Gallery shop for a quick browse.
There are always many artworks to put a smile on one's face .
The Zulu-Lulu raku busts (above) in particular. Read more about them here and here. I took this photograph for Leanne who creates the most enchanting clay whimsies and Don who makes quirky clay characters that put a smile on my face.
beautiful, beautiful photos..cao from Italy, Stef

Where have I been? I've missed so many posts! Well, I'll just have to comment on all of them here.
ReplyDelete1st: I salivated over the carved statues in the KZNSA Gallery shop. I want. I want!
2nd: Those tin giraffes at the the Shongweni farmers market are remarkable and the treats sound delicious.
3rd: The first picture of the carved heads and the wooden game is beautiful. Like you, I am putty in a bookstore. Don't let me go in one, you won't get me out. I've got to go find that book by Lynne Perrella. I embarrass myself taking pictures for the blog, I hate the heat and like to spend the whole weekend by myself since I have to be with people all week long.
4th: Papier mache Lucy is precious!
Robyn...you would have to 'pry' me away from such a gallery!!!
ReplyDeleteThe tin 'mozzie' is spectacular...just love recycled art. It looks fab and makes sense!!!
Those Durban houses are wonderful! Love the iron lacework and big verandahs.
i so enjoy visiting your area with you! what a quirky mosquito!
ReplyDeletethat house really catches the eye...
ReplyDeletethe first thing I notice is the driver (your husband?) on the right side of the car - that always throws me off - the domes look amazing - what are they exactly? - and the figures in the gallery are just wonderful - is this the gallery where you show? - so many questions.
ReplyDeletelucky you.thank you for sharing this robyn,it sure did put a smile on my face.
ReplyDeleteLove the Raku busts so much! They seem so regal and happy carrying their wares. Beautiful.
ReplyDeleteAnd the mosquito is amazing.
Thanks you for sharing your world. It seems so magical.
Leanne
Gufobardo, great to hear from someone in Italy!
ReplyDeleteStevie, I think I had a rush of blood to the head and wrote 3 posts in quick succession.
Jo, there's a lot more to the gallery. The photographs were taken in the shop so there are several more rooms with different exhibitions going on all the time.
Julie, I couldn't resist snapping that mozzie!
Priya, There are so many of those houses with the wrap around veranders in old Durban.
Jeane, Yes my husband driving. The domes form the upper level of a huge shopping complex. Light pours in through these glass domes.
Yes, I show my work at the KZNSA Gallery. These photographs are taken in the shop. There are many more exhibition rooms.
Megha, it was a lucky day! You know when all the things you've been wanting to buy but havn't been able to find suddenly appear all at once?I bit hard on the pocket but amazing when it happens.
Leanne, glad you enjoyed the tour.
Very nice. I'm so distracted when I enter a shop with items like these. When we visited Tanzania, I bought lots and lots of wood carvings - couldn't get enough of them! :) Cute mosquito.
ReplyDeleteWay cool! Thanks for the photos. The guy with the fish on his head - I love to put stuff on heads and have missed doing that lately. May have to get back to it.
ReplyDeleteHi Robyn! (found you through Heather.)
ReplyDeleteOh how lovely to read about my most favourite place in Durban.. the KZNSA! Makes me miss home, and my friends at the gallery.
And the house you photographed in Essenwood Road across from Musgrave Centre...do you know that two absolutely amazing and well known Durban artists (I won't mention here for privacy's sake but you've probably heard of them) live there?!
So great to experience a slice of home here.. thank you! x
OK, I'd scroll past one photo thinking "I'll comment on this one - it's fabulous" and then the next one shows up on the screen and I'd have to say the same about the next one! But the raku busts and the mosquito were pretty cool.
ReplyDeletewhat a wonderful post, Robyn. Thanks for the link to info about the Zulu-Lulu ... what a wonderful group ... and that mosquito is priceless!
ReplyDeletethanks so much for the lovely tour while out and about. the gallery has many goodies! love that mosquito sculpture. makes me want to do something with recyclables. also enjoyed the scenic drive. what a treat :) m.a.
ReplyDeleteBindu, I have the same proble. I just can't stop buying wood carvings. Where to put them..where to put them?
ReplyDeleteDon, it's so typical here to carry things on top of heads.
Jin, so glad you found a little bit of home on my blog. I followed you back to your site and see what a talented artist you are.
Heather, that's the feeling I had all weekend with my camera. I'll snap this, no I'll snap that and then forget this and remember later that I hadn't actually snapped what I really wanted to snap in the first place. Phew I'm confusing myself all over again.
3rdEyemuse, I'm kicking myself for not buying the mosquito now but I had done enough spending by that stage.
Maryann, glad you enjoyed the tour. It was one of those days when everything ran smoothly. As we moved from place to place we missed the rain by degrees.
What wonderful finds--I especially like the mosquito sculpture.
ReplyDeleteLooks like such an interesting gallery! I do love faces.
ReplyDeleteAhhh! Snacking oneself silly at the market- one of my favorite things to do.
ReplyDeleteI'm quite taken with the Zulu-Lulu busts you discovered.
